sudo life » Music http://blog.sudolife.org The psuedolife of Josh Charles Fri, 18 Jun 2010 14:15:36 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.0 A Reminder of an Unfortunate Creation http://blog.sudolife.org/2008/11/21/a-reminder-of-an-unfortunate-creation/ http://blog.sudolife.org/2008/11/21/a-reminder-of-an-unfortunate-creation/#comments Fri, 21 Nov 2008 16:29:49 +0000 josh http://blog.sudolife.org/?p=240 A few days ago I was experiencing some trouble with my installation of Firefox, so I went through the process of completely uninstalling it so I could then reinstall it.  This easily morphed into a cleanup of my entire work system (of course this was on my work computer running vista and not on my mac).  In any case there were several programs installed that I just wasn’t using any more and files that needed to be deleted, et cetera, so I got with it.  I noticed that MSN Messenger was automatically loading during startup, and I didn’t want this, so I looked for a way to remove this behavior.  This involved signing into the system.  Immediately upon signing in, I received a text message from someone who I thought was an old friend.  The following is a transcript of the conversation:

oldfriend says:  Sup!
Josh says:  hey man!  what’s up?
oldfriend says: Sang your song last week.

At this point, I’m thinking “What in the world?…”

oldfriend says: Still hits home when I sing it.
Josh says: which song is that?
oldfriend says: “Our God is powerfull, our God is wonderful…”
oldfriend says: That one.

Okay, now I remember.  See, when I was still a christian, I used to write worship songs.  I’m a musician, so what else would I do?  This particular song happened to be the only one that other people actually liked.  This was because I took the best music I had written on my own at that time and adapted it into a worship song.  How embarrassing is that?  It’s too bad because this music could have been used for something much greater.  At least there is no danger of making that particular mistake again.

It was a very good decision to make. This band is crazy good, and listening to them live is auditory bliss. They played the program they performed in their tour of the other side of the pond, which they completed last June. They are the highest placing American Brass Band ever in the British Brass Band Championships. After hearing them, I can only imagine what the best over there might be like.

The highlight of the evening for me was a performance of Sparke’s “Music of the Spheres.” It’s a great piece, but must be a real chop buster. The last minute and a half, I just had to laugh. The technical virtuosity required borders on the absurd. Sparke said about this piece that he feels like it presses brass bands about as far as possible, and it’s easy to see why. This piece is a must hear at some point.

It was a bit strange, but I remember sitting down and composing a piece of music, and then being able to hear it actually played. I remember feeling absolute joy when I heard it, as if it was the most perfect thing I had ever heard.

However, I cannot for the life of me, remember how it went. I’ve been trying and trying to remember all day, and it eludes me.

That is very maddening.
